A translation adapted from Bouanchaud:
The mind becomes quiet when it cultivates friendliness in the presence of happiness, active compassion in the presence of unhappiness, joy in the presence of virtue, and [non attachment] towards error [vice]
Similarly from Villoldo, and I love the poetry of this:
So many ways to still the mind: make friends with those who live in joy, have compassion for those who suffer, delight in those who shine with virtue and integrity, [meet with an even mind] those who dwell in darkness
And from Rohit Mehta:
When the obstacles are removed, a new approach to human relationship is revealed and is symbolized by friendliness, compassion, cheerfulness and a consideration towards another's happiness or misery, virtue or vice.
I most appreciate how this final translation points us back to what we've been exploring so far, obstacles to a clear, calm, engaged but non-attached mind, and therefore towards yoga's possible influence on how we are in the world, not just on our mat.
